A Planning Toolkit for First Nations and Aboriginal Communities to Prevent and Respond to Suicide
The British Columbia First Nations Health Authority--Health Through Wellness has published a valuable resource for First Nations, Aboriginal, and Indigenous communities, as well as Health Directors, Band Managers, community health workers, and other professionals engaged in suicide prevention and response efforts. The Hope, Help, and Healing Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention Toolkit is designed to assist in planning at various levels, including community, tribal council, Nation-based, and sub-regional, with the goal of aiding community workers in developing a strengths-based comprehensive suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention plans tailored to their specific communities.
Suicide isn’t usually caused by a single issue or event. It is usually the result of many combined issues that a person or his/her community faces. Many factors influence physical and mental health and wellness. Suicides are most often the result of emotional pain, hopelessness and despair. They are almost always preventable through caring, compassion, commitment and community.
