Indigenous People, Trauma, and Suicide Prevention (Toolkit)

The Centre for Suicide Prevention's toolkit, Indigenous People, Trauma and Suicide Prevention, is a resource designed to provide an introduction to the issues of trauma and suicide within Indigenous communities. The toolkit offers a statistical glimpse into the prevalence of trauma and suicide for Indigenous peoples, the impact of intergenerational trauma, and the heightened risk of suicide among some Indigenous populations. It further describes the relationship between suicide prevention and life promotion within Indigenous communities and the importance of hope, belonging, meaning, purpose, and culture in fostering mental well-being and resilience. The toolkit further addresses topics such as healing trauma to prevent suicide, challenges faced by Indigenous people in urban centers, the healing power of culture, and restorative justice in repairing historical trauma. This suicide prevention toolkit empowers individuals with the knowledge to contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding these critical issues.
